Device Compatibility Analysis

A technically important aspect of M-Flow comparison is the question of device interoperability. Thailand's M-Flow system uses the 5.8 GHz DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communications) protocol for RFID communication. This is the same frequency band used by many international electronic toll systems, but the specific protocols, encoding standards, and account infrastructure are not interoperable across national systems.

Travelers who use electronic toll transponders in their home countries — E-ZPass in the United States, TollTag in Australia, Liber-t in France, or similar systems in other countries — cannot use those devices on Thailand's M-Flow expressways. The transponders will not be recognized by M-Flow gantry readers, and the accounts are not linked to EXAT's system.

This lack of international interoperability is not unique to Thailand. It reflects the current state of global electronic toll collection, where national systems have developed independently with proprietary account infrastructure. International interoperability for toll systems remains an active area of development in transportation policy, but practical implementation is limited to specific bilateral or regional agreements.
